For the first time since fleeing their homeland, Afghanistan’s women’s football team has stepped back onto the international stage — not as representatives of a government, but as symbols of courage, resistance, and hope.

Competing in a four-team friendly tournament organized by FIFA in Morocco, the Afghan refugee squad walked onto the pitch wearing their nation’s colors, even as their country remains under Taliban rule — a regime that has banned women from sports and education.

Many of the players were part of the original Afghan national team that disbanded after the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Since then, they’ve rebuilt their lives in exile — training in makeshift facilities, balancing jobs and studies, and fighting to keep their dream alive.

“This moment is more than football,” said team captain Shabnam Mobarez, who has lived in Denmark since escaping Kabul. “It’s about telling the world that Afghan women still exist, still dream, and still fight.”

The team’s participation was made possible through collaboration between FIFA, the Moroccan Football Federation, and humanitarian groups that have supported Afghan athletes in exile. Despite losing their opening match, the players celebrated every goal and every cheer as a victory over silence and fear.

Observers described the match as deeply emotional. Fans waved Afghan flags from the stands, chanting the players’ names — a defiant act of recognition for women whose voices were once erased.

For these women, football is no longer just a sport. It’s a declaration of identity and freedom. And as they continue their journey on the global stage, they carry with them the hopes of a nation still waiting to reclaim its right to play.
