An internal controversy has hit the Los Angeles Lakers after reports emerged that an “unofficial team associate”allegedly leaked information about LeBron James’ injury status before a key matchup — information that was then used for sports betting purposes.
According to a leak investigation by ESPN and The Athletic, the individual, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, reportedly advised bettors to “get a big bet on Milwaukee”, shortly after learning LeBron would not play due to a minor groin strain. The message, allegedly shared through private chats, triggered suspicion among sportsbooks as betting volume on the Milwaukee Bucks spiked hours before tip-off.
While the Lakers organization has not released an official statement, team sources confirm that internal protocols regarding player health data and confidentiality are being reviewed. “We take integrity and compliance very seriously,” one Lakers spokesperson said, adding that any breach of trust could result in permanent bans and potential legal action.
The NBA has increased its monitoring of irregular betting patterns over the last two seasons, especially after the legalization of sports gambling across multiple U.S. states. Experts warn that insider leaks — even informal ones — could undermine public confidence in the league’s integrity and lead to stricter data handling rules among franchises.
LeBron James, who returned to practice two days later, declined to comment directly on the incident, emphasizing instead the need for focus ahead of the team’s upcoming games. “We control what we can control,” he told reporters, when asked about the leak.
Industry analysts note that this situation highlights the growing tension between professional sports and the gambling industry, where even minor leaks can sway betting markets and raise ethical questions about team transparency.
