Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stern warning to the United States and its allies, declaring that Moscow “will never bow” to external pressure. Speaking at a televised meeting with senior defense officials, Putin emphasized Russia’s readiness to respond if Western nations deploy missiles near its borders.
“Russia has always defended its sovereignty, and we will continue to do so,” Putin said, according to TASS, Russia’s state news agency. He specifically mentioned that the deployment of long-range missiles in Europe could provoke “symmetrical or asymmetrical” responses.
This declaration comes amid heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. U.S. and NATO officials have expressed concerns over Russian military movements near Eastern Europe, while Russia criticizes what it calls Western encroachment and sanctions targeting its defense and energy sectors.
Analysts note that Putin’s comments also serve a domestic political purpose. With Russia approaching its 2026 presidential cycle, projecting strength and resilience is crucial for reinforcing his image at home. “These statements are aimed both at deterring Western powers and rallying domestic support,” said Michael Kofman, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Efforts to restart arms control talks, such as the New START treaty, remain stalled. Moscow blames Washington for violations and refusal of on-site inspections, while the U.S. points to Russia’s noncompliance and military expansion.
Putin’s latest remarks underscore a growing risk of escalation, highlighting the fragile state of U.S.-Russia relations and the potential for further militarization in Europe. As global powers watch closely, the message is clear: Russia intends to defend its strategic interests at all costs.
